Common traits of an Empath and why they need protection:
Empaths are drawn to healing themselves and others. They are usually drawn to healing, because they feel that they have so much internal healing to do....until, that is, they realize that most of the healing needed is for others that they are intuitively 'feeling'.
They are usually in a state of constant fatigue. This is a huge issue. People, along with their energies are constantly invading an Empaths energy. An Empath will usually take on too much and become drained very quickly, and it's not easily cured by sleep or rest. It goes much deeper than that and is quite exhausting.
Empaths are excellent listeners. They genuinely care about the well-being of others and find themselves listening to the woes of people they don't even know. Most people find Empaths so easy to open up to. That's when they start dumping all kinds of negativity going in their life. Sometimes, people aren't even aware they are doing this.
In most cases, an Empath with take care of the needs of others even before their own, because they care so much. Since people get comfortable enough around them to open up, they will usually selflessly lend their ear to help a person; even if it's to their own detriment.
Alone time is a necessity for an Empaths. Many Empaths like to get away from all of the emotions and energy that is not theirs so they require much needed time alone. This is time for them to get back to balance, and distance themselves from all negativity that is not theirs.
An Empaths can also appear as moody. Empaths sometimes seem to have major mood swings, and this sometimes is contributed to all of the overwhelming thoughts and feelings bombarding them on a daily basis. Not only are they bombarded with these energies, but now they need to clearly sort through and figure out all that stuff coming their way.
They are emotionally sensitive to violence, cruelty, or any sort of tragedy. Most Empaths quit watching the television and reading the newspapers at some point in their lives, as this too, can be very overwhelming for an empath.
Just plain knowing is also a common Empath trait. Empaths sometimes know things that they are positive they were never taught or told. This knowing is very different than intuition or a gut feeling.
Being in public places is often overwhelming or painful to an empath. Again so many people's emotions are in public places that can be picked up when not even trying to. This is a roller coaster most Empaths will avoid at all costs.
An Empath can 'feel' honesty and integrity. They can tell if someone is being honest or not, which is very unsettling and sometimes painful in your life. It's especially unsettling when they are dealing with loved ones.
Feeling the physical symptoms and pains of another. Many Empaths will find themselves developing an ailment that someone else has that has nothing to do with them. This is empathy at its finest.
These are just a few of the traits of an Empath. Again, being an Empath can be either considered a curse or a gift depending on the tools you use to protect yourself. There are many ways for an Empaths to Protect themselves. Avoiding large social gatherings or public places at all costs is one way. But there are times when you just cannot avoid these things. There are quite a few helpful ways to protect yourself as an Empath. Here's what I like to keep in what I call 'My Bag of Tricks': I use Crystals, Meditation, and The White Light of Protection.
Rose Quartz is a fantastic crystal for an Empath because its healing properties promote unconditional love and comfort. This is especially good for a person that may be holding less than loving energies of something, someone, or even themselves.
Black Tourmaline or Hematite are also great crystals for an Empath to help them stay grounded. These stones will also help to absorb any negative energies.
Malachite is another crystal that will help absorb any negative feelings you may be having; whether they are your own or not!
Labradorite is a crystal that will actually help protect your aura from absorbing any issues that are being shared with you.
Citrine is a yellow crystal to help brighten your mood. Another Citrine healing property is that it can also help absorb bad energy from your environment.
Another go to crystal for me is Amethyst. Not only is it beautiful, but it will strengthen your intuition. Heightened intuition is wonderful for everyone, but especially for Empaths to help them truly know that the feelings they may be having are theirs or not.
Last but not least is Rainbow Fluorite. Rainbow Fluorite may very well be, in my opinion, the Mother of all crystals for an Empath as it helps all levels of being! This is a multi-colored crystal that can help you stay grounded to the earth, help clear and balance all Chakras, as well as to help you stay attuned to higher dimensions.

Meditation has been used for thousands of years as a way to attain a level of awareness that is beyond the limitations of the every day thinking mind. Quite simply, it's the practice of bringing together, the mind, body, and spirit!
Most don't realize that our bodies were meant to be self-correcting to maintain positive health by simply keeping mind, body and spirit in balance. Imagine how easy it is to be out of balance when the energy of others infiltrates your body on a daily basis. It's epic!
When your out of balance, your life-force energy doesn't flow quite the way it should. Being out of balance shows up in life as aches and pains. And when your out of balance for long enough, your body begins to create illness and disease.
Alone time and meditation is a wonderful way for an empath to keep themselves balanced, healthy and whole. This is the practice of loving yourself that most Empaths put at the back of the line, if they even put it in the line of importance at all!
White Light of Protection
When I just cannot avoid doing things that don't peak my 'wow meter', such as going into large crowds, I usually try to protect myself and my energy with 'White Light'. Many people do it differently and there's really no right or wrong way to do it, because truly it's all about the power of intention.
Take a few minutes to yourself and sit in a quiet place before you do anything. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. On each in-breath, visualize the white light of protection coming into your body through your crown and filling your entire being. Continue breathing in the white light and when your entire body is filled with light, imagine that light now shining brightly and growing so big that it now shines outside of you, surrounding your entire body. Sit breathing deeply for a few moments and feel light that surrounds you. Now smile and have a bit of gratitude, because you've just practiced self-love by putting yourself first. And you've just completed protected yourself from all unwanted and negative energies around you!

Let's talk about what it means to be an empath...
Being an empath is when you are affected by other people's energies, and you have an innate ability to intuitively feel and perceive others. Your life is unconsciously influenced by others' desires, wishes, thoughts, moods, and even pain. Being an empath is much more than being highly sensitive and it's not just limited to emotions or physical pain. Empaths can also perceive the motivations and intentions of people around them. Being an empath, you are always open, so to speak, to process other people's feelings and energy. This means that you really feel, and in many cases, take on the emotions of others, sometimes unknowingly.
Many empaths experience things like chronic fatigue, environmental sensitivities, or unexplained aches and pains daily. These are all things that are more likely to be contributed to outside influences and not so much yourself at all. Essentially, you walk around this world with all of the accumulated karma, emotions, and energy from others. Here are the listeners of life. Empathic people are often problem solvers, thinkers, and studiers of many things.
I personally have 'felt' things for a very long time in my younger years and I had no idea I was an empath. I just knew sometimes that I was sad, unsettled, had unusual pains, or was even angry with no apparent reason to be. It wasn't until I was in my late 30's that I learned what it was to be an empath, and why I always felt so different. And it took me quite a bit to truly realize this gift. Today, I'm calling it a gift. In my earlier years, I didn't always think of this as a gift because I didn't know how to contain it, control it, or even protect myself. Now I'm usually (and I use the word 'usually' loosely, LOL) aware of things I'm feeling that aren't specifically mine, whether emotions things or physical symptoms. Sometimes, however, it takes me some time to figure it out and realize what's happening. An example of this is something that happened to me the other night at a yoga class.
The minute I walked into the yoga room, I got a tickle in my throat that I couldn't quite clear. It was just the instructor and me in the room so I just drank my water and didn't think anything more about it. My throat became very scratchy and I had some coughing for a few minutes. The more I thought about it, I realized that I was perfectly fine before going to class, so I was beginning to think that this issue with my throat was not my own. In chatting with the instructor before class, she mentioned having a sinus thing going on, and suddenly during the class and my coughing fit, it clicked, that I was probably feeling her, and not me at all.
At one point during class and much coughing going on, I stopped doing yoga and walked around the room to clear it. I truly wasn't certain if I was feeling the energy of the room or the instructor. What do I mean by clearing? I sent Reiki Energy to the room. I walked from one side of the room, all the way around it, sending Reiki, and continued all the way to the door. Once I made it to the door, I opened it and literally pushed any stagnant energy that may have been in there out through the door. Of course, naturally, everyone looked at me like I had 9 heads, until I was able to explain later what I had just done.
Naturally, being used to people reacting like this, I giggled to myself and went back to my practice. I noticed after that, my throat was clear. I had no more tickle, and no more coughing. At the end of yoga, right at the beginning in the beginning of Shavasana, I went back to the intention set earlier and sent Reiki Healing Energy to the instructor, the yoga room, and the entire room full of practicing yogi's! After class, I explained what I had done, and the instructor told me that her head suddenly felt completely fine.
And that, my friends, is what it's like to be an empath! There are too many more to even get into. My next few articles will be concentrating on how to protect you from absorbing others' energy as well as protecting yourself from the negativity of other people and things, even if you are not an empath. First I have to say, I am a metaphysical girl. What do I mean by that? I am a spiritual being; I belief in Angels, Energy Healing, the Power of Crystals, then Energy of the Earth, and a Higher Power. One of the loves of my life, my 25 year old son, is an engineer. He's a science guy. While I love him with all of me and love to debate with him often about the differences in our beliefs, it makes me really check into things that I believe in so that I can have an intelligent sparring match about certain topics with him. One of those topics of our disputes was the Himalayan Salt Lamp. The benefits stated below are in fact found, but on such a small scale, that I could not find documented scientific evidence.
This is what just one Himalayan salt lamp company touts: Emits negative ions that fight against electromagnetic radiation and fights fatigue and sluggishness; It also increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, protects against airborne germs, increases work productivity and creativity, improves bone strength, soothes allergies; Sleep better & wake refreshed.
First, Electromagnetic Radiation is emitted from your TV, computer, cell phones and all electronics that seem to be attached to our hips and in some cases used in our daily lives more than 10 hours out of our day. These daily emission of electromagnetic radiation contributes to lowering the melatonin levels within our bodies. Lets look at why melatonin is so important to us. Melatonin plays an important role in the sleep cycle, sometimes called “The Dracula” of hormones as it only comes out at night. Lower levels of melatonin affect your immune system, your mental health, and is the regulator of sex hormone production. This is huge. Melatonin deficiencies have shown in patients with cancer, heart disease, ulcers, and even Alzheimer's. I personally had a low level of Melatonin when I lost my thyroid and my sleep was disrupted regularly. Aside from the issues of not having a thyroid, not being in the right mind as well due to lack of sleep and proper necessary hormone levels throughout the body was truly awful.
When the heat from the salt lamp warms the crystal, a negative electrical charge is emitted, ionizing our atmosphere, which in fact helps to neutralized harmful EMF radiation. Just imagine though, this small Himalayan Salt Lamp and the huge amounts of electronics that we surround ourselves with daily. Negative Ionization is truly a benefit here, but, unless you are a person who is off the grid, so to speak, the electromagnetic radiation of all of these electronics, far outweigh any negative ions the salt lamp can produce. You can certainly do better for yourself here and put a salt lamp in every room you spend a considerable amount of time in, including your office, which might be significantly favorable in the hormone department of your body.
Secondly, negative ions are proven to increase the oxygen in our brain and other organs, as well as boosting the serotonin levels which results in higher mental energy and alertness, and makes us feel happy. It's for this reason that most people feel more refreshed and happy while at the beach....Running water is considered the world's greatest source of negative ions. While with this lamp, we're talking about just a small amount of negative ions in your home or work space. But doesn't that account for something? In my world and belief system, every little bit of good you do for yourself is growth to all of you; physically, mentally, and spiritually. And every little bit of kindness you give to yourself, is negating (even if just a minute amount), the toxicity that surrounds us on a daily basis.
Thirdly, the salt lamps are also said to be Hydroscopic which means it attracts water vapor from the air to it. In attracting the water vapor, along with that vapor, it's also attracting things trapped inside the water molecules like mold, bacteria, allergens, and other contaminants improving our air quality by trapping it to them into the salt crystal. Talk to the person who has severe allergies, or severe asthma and see how they feel about improved air quality. To them, even the tiniest amount of improvement can be expressed as monumental in their ability to breath and feel well because they are getting more oxygen to their brain than usual during allergy season. Personally speaking on allergies and someone who is allergic to dust; I work in an office building that is not always properly cleaned or air purified as maybe I would do to my own home, and this is life altering daily, not just allergy season.
Salt lamps may even help with SAD – seasonal affective disorder. Due to the soft orange hues and soothing colors reminiscent of a sunshine effect, they tend to be calming and increase can even increase clarity and focus of daily chores or work that sometimes gets to be overwhelming during this time. Some people suffering from SAD have been starting to put these lights on timers to relax the mind during a time of less sunlight. Again, it may not be a cure all but any bit of relief is better than no relief, and this is all natural.
So this is my own personal hypothesis. Just as being on a beach with the salt air, helps many people feel and breath better, so too, does the salt lamp. While they may not may an enormous difference in negative ions, a benefit is a benefit and better than none at all. Salt lamps definitely don't hold a candle to an air purification system, but much like the relief attained by breathing in the salt air at the seashore, it can be an additional healing asset in your life. Truly, the way I see it is, you absolutely could be a “glass half empty” kind of person, and don't want to hear about any of these so-called “tiny” perks because you consider them to be too insignificant to care about. That is definitely your right, but in my opinion, any slight improvement to your health, mind, & body, is worth it, because YOU are worth it!! Lastly, with the aesthetics alone, you have can add a salt lamp to any room to serve merely as a beautiful accent piece.
I'd love to hear what experience you may have with a salt lamp. Immediately, when I got mine, I noticed a difference in my breathing as well as my energy level, which I'll be honest, truly did surprise me. I just love mine!!
We are coming into a time of awakening in the world with lots of talk about envisioning and positive affirmations. Being a firm believer in the power of "The Secret", I believe that we attract whatever it is that we focus on in our lives. Keep this in mind and think about it... especially when wonderful things happen and you are truly happy. Do you ever notice the snowball effect of really great happenings or experiences? The same goes with the opposite. When you fall out of tune with positive energy, less than wonderful circumstances arise.
Positive affirmations are a wonderful tool in this world to help you get to the visions and dreams, but you must understand that you always need to look within and see what needs healing first. It is imperative that you honor the parts of your life that need healing. Without the step of embracing any pain in your life and healing it, you're essentially masking it with positive thoughts that won't have the strength to overcome what's necessary to support you.
Imagine this... Imagine that the outside of your home is old and dingy looking with paint chipping away from it at every angle. You go out and by brand new paint in a beautiful color hand chosen by your desire for your house to revive and renew its beauty. Think about step 1: Chipping all of the excess paint and sanding it down to a smooth base so that the paint will go on smoothly and evenly with a new shine and beauty. If you skip this first step, you will still have an old looking house with new looking paint chipping off at every angle. You get the point!
You can't just cover up the pain of any issues you may have to be healed and released with a new coat of paint. These issues will keep popping up on you. You really need to see them for what they are, sit with them, accept them, and let them go. Feel these feelings that go along with them, because it's these issues that make you who you are.
Really think about these words.
Now sit quietly for a moment and breathe into your heart. What feelings for you are popping up here into your heart that need healing. Truly feel these feelings to the fullest, be grateful that they are their, as they are a reminder of the lessons you need to learn. Feel the anger, sadness, or whatever it is that is with you in this moment. Feel it, resonate with it, appreciate it, and let it go. Now your can breath into your heart a layer of positive affirmations that will truly stick. Just try it, and you will be amazed with what comes next in your life.
